The Nanos mountains are rich in fauna and flora. In the Southern and Western foothills of Nanos a 2632 ha area is protected as a landscape park. The area has old beech forest with a lot of dead wood and open terrain that is attractive for many birds. Among the birds you can encounter are Águia-real, Pica-pau-de-dorso-branco, Pica-pau-preto, Torcicolo, Cia, Escrevedeira-de-garganta-preta, Corvo, Melro-das-rochas, and Perdiz-das-rochas. The area is also of botanical interest.

From Podnanos a 15 km winding road leads up. When you arrive in the higher area, you can choose from various well-signposted dirt roads that are passable with a normal car. You can park almost everywhere along the street.
