While the sugar plant between Kovin and the Danube, about 50 km east of Belgrade, is closed, the triangular ponds are nowadays filled up by the pet food factory effluents, and can be quite smelly. Yet, being next to the Danube floodzone, the area is rich in wildlife and has more natural feel about it.
Local waders include Pilrito-de-bico-comprido, Borrelho-pequeno-de-coleira, Pernilongo, Alfaiate, Ostraceiro (rare so deep in the continent), Tarambola-cinzenta, Abibe-comum, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Rola-do-mar (rare so deep in the continent), Combatente, Pilrito-comum, Pilrito-pequeno, Narceja-comum, Maçarico-das-rochas, Pássaro-bique-bique, Perna-verde-comum, Maçarico-bastardo, Perna-vermelha-comum. Among the breeding Guincho-comum, there are few pairs of Gaivota-de-cabeça-preta. Due to the closeness of the river Danube, terns on migration are diverse: Andorinha-do-mar-anã, Gaivina-de-bico-preto, Gaivina-de-bico-vermelho, Gaivina-preta, Gaivina-d'asa-branca and, in the breeding season, Gaivina-de-faces-brancas.
Other species include Garca-vaqueira and Papa-ratos, Bútio-vespeiro, Pica-pau-sírio, Pica-pau-verde, Pica-pau-preto, Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo, Picanço-pequeno (uncommon), Felosa-pálida, Felosa-icterina, Felosa-dos-juncos, Felosa-palustre and Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços.

While an asphalt road passes next to the pond, the turn-off is somewhat unusual and I marked it as a route on the map. If you reach the ponds by car, park at the beginning of the route (driving along the levee is prohibited and the barrier is often closed and locked). For driving directions, zoom in on the map and click on the "P" (parking) sign.
