Steppe, woodland, scrub and conifer plantations, about an hour drive east of Belgrade.
The Čardak area (60 min from Belgrade) could be the most suitable hotspot for short, morning visits to the Deliblato Sands Nature Reserve because of its closeness to Belgrade and its network of marked walking trails (trail driving is prohibited!), followed by excellent Turkish coffee and fresh muffins in the local restaurant.
Local birds include Rola-comum , Búteo-mouro , Poupa , Torcicolo , Pica-pau-mediano , Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno , Cotovia-pequena , papa-amoras-cinzento , Rabirruivo-preto , Chamariz-comum , Trigueirão , etc. Generally, the best birding is in ecotones where forest meets grassland, and wherever there is any source of water (usually an artificial concrete watering hole for deer).
More than half of the area of Deliblato Sands is nowadays overgrown with planted forest of Locust Tree, Austrian Pine and Scots Pine, inhabited by Red Deer, Roe Deer and Wild Boar.
Be sure to bring at least a litre of water per person. You can restock at petrol stations, but do not count on village shops with their erratic opening hours.
The Čardak area is reachable from Belgrade through Pančevo and the villages of Dolovo and Mramorak to Deliblato, and then 7 more kilometres to Čardak.
If driving along an unpaved road (99%), be extra careful not to start a wildfire by an overheated exhaust pipe! Also, don’t damage the sensitive steppe vegetation by driving at will: follow only the existing dirt tracks and be careful not to get lost, nor stuck in the sand.
Adapted from the reserve authorities web site, mostly by Google translate:
"The Education centre Čardak, opened in 2010, is located in the afforested part of the Deliblato sands, only 7 km far from the Deliblato village. The multi-functional centre, surrounded by clearly marked trais (3.5 to 15 km), with information panels, resting places and monitoring watchtowers (3) along the way, gives opportunity to spend a good quality time in nature to pupils, students, and especially to the experts in biology.
Trail no. 6 – Health path: circular walking pathway, total length 3.5 km. The trail is also suitable for hiking in winter.
Trail no. 5 – Eco path: circular walking pathway, total length 3.5 km. The trail is also suitable for hiking in winter.
Trail no. 4 – The path of Joy: circular walking pathway, total length 5 km.

Trail no. 2 – Borovi breg: walking path in the shape of the figure 8, total length 15 km (possible to cut it in half).
Trail no. 1 – Čardak-Vrela: circular walking path, total length 12 km."
