The natural monument of Portas de Ródão is a breathtaking masterpiece of nature in the region of Central Portugal. River Tagus flows through two gigantic quartz rocks, truly reminding of “doors”. On the north top of Portas de Ródão, that can be easily reached by road, you will find the small castle of King Wamba (named after a Visigoth king), also known as the “Castelo de Ródão”. From this viewpoint you will have a wonderful panoramic view over the Tagus valley and you can find threatened birds, such as Abutre do Egipto, Abutre-preto, Grifo de Rüppell, Águia-real, Águia de Bonelli, Águia-cobreira, Águia-calçada, Bútio-vespeiro, Milhafre-real and Cegonha-preta. Within the soaring birds, the Grifo-comum are the one that stand out, as this natural monument is home to the largest colony in the country. Portas de Ródão is also a good spot to detect Noitibó da Europa, Coruja-do-mato, coruja-da-igreja / coruja-das-torres, Mocho-galego, Mocho-d'orelhas, Bufo-pequeno and the extraordinary Bufo-real. The best way to prospect the crags is taking a boat trip. Not only allows you to observe the Grifo-comum more closely, but also allows you to detect other rupicolous birds, such as Melro-azul andFerreirinha-alpina. The boat trip also allows you to observe Guarda-rios-comum, Pato-real, Mergulhão-pequeno, Mergulhão-de-crista, Galinha-d'água, Maçarico-das-rochas, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas, Garça-real, Garça-branca-grande, Garça-branca-pequena; and other birds that are in the river bank like Cegonha-branca, Corvo, Gralha-preta, Abibe-comum, Pega-azul and Pega-rabuda. A walk through the surrounding lands also allows the detection and observation of Codorniz, Perdiz-comum, Cuco-rabilongo, Cuco-canoro, Poupa, Abelharuco-comum, Papa-figos, Picanço-barreteiro, picanço-real, Toutinegra-real, Papa-amoras-comum, Pardal-montez, Pardal-francês and Pintarroxo-comum. In the skies you can also see several swifts: Andorinhão-cafre, Andorinhão-real, Andorinhão-preto and Andorinhão-pálido.
