Descrição
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Gaivota-de-patas-amarelas, gaivota-da-asa-escura and Guincho-comum. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Maçarico-galego, Rola-do-mar, Pilrito-sanderlingo and Maçarico-das-rochas.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Andorinha-do-mar-comum and Andorinha-do-mar-rósea, but sometimes also Garajau-comum.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Bobo-grande can be observed. Small numbers of Alma-negra can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Pardela-sombria and Pintainho.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Gaivota de Delaware, Gaivota-polar and, in 2011, a Matirao.
