Descrição
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include Cotovia-de-poupa, shrikes, Codorniz, Trigueirão, Cotovia-pequena, Toutinegra-de-cabeça-preta, Felosa-do-mato and Escrevedeira-de-garganta-preta. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, Ganso-patola, Bobo-grande, Cagarra-do-mediterrânico and Pardela do Mediterrâneo pass by, and falcão-peregrino, Andorinhão-pálido, Melro-azul and Rabirruivo-preto breed on the cliffs. Also Andorinhão-real, Águia de Bonelli and Estorninho-preto can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect Falcão-da-rainha, Melro-de-peito-branco, Borrelho-ruivo and Petinha de Richard.
