During the spring many waterbirds breed in the Ruda Fishponds Grebes such as Mergulhão-pequeno, Mergulhão-de-crista and Mergulhão-de-pescoço-ruivo. During migration many ducks can be seen, most interesting: Arrabio, Pato-trombeteiro, Frisada, Marreco and Marrequinha-comum, and sometimes others. Guarda-rios-comum can be seen every time on the river flowing through the complex. In the reeds you can hear and see Chapim-de-bigode, Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços, Chapim-de-faces-pretas, rouxinol-dos-caniços and various other species of warblers. In the sky raptors such as Águia-rabalva, Águia-d'asa-redonda, Gavião da Europa and Açor. Various songbird species live in the nearby forest as well. During the migration plenty of shorebirds stop by. Perna-verde-comum, Maçarico-bastardo, Narceja-comum, Combatente, Pássaro-bique-bique and Maçarico-das-rochas being the most common ones.

One small parking spot behind the bridge on the river. Click on the P in the map for directions. Don't wander of the paths as it's a privately owned area. The area can only be visited on foot. The circular route indicated on the map is about 5 km.
