Descrição

Hardangervidda is the largest mountain plateau in Europe, covering an area of about 6,500 km2. With an average elevation of 1,100 metres, which is well above the tree limit, the climate is cold and alpine year-round. The barren landscape is dominated by rolling moraine hills, with marshes and lakes lined by willow and dwarf birch in between. In the north, the dark ridge Hallingskarvet rise in stark contrast to the gleaming white glacier Hardangerjøkulen. In the south-west the brick-shaped rock formation Hårteigen makes an outstanding landmark. The plateau is the remnant of a mountain area that was eroded by glaciers during the ice ages. The area owes its current shape to these glaciers, with large open plains, rustic lakes and high peaks on the edge. The number of bird species is not very high, but they are often species that you do not easily see elsewhere, such as Lagópode-branco, Mobêlha-árctica, Búteo-calçado or Pintarroxo-de-queixo-preto.
