During high tide, huge groups of wading birds gather at Zwarte Haan at a high-water refuge. Many different wading bird and duck species can be seen, sometimes tens of thousands at a time. In winter and spring, groups of thousands of Pilrito-comum, Maçarico-real and Marrequinha-comum are reported. Ganso-de-faces-negras and Arrabio are also abundant during this period. For example Pato-branco, Alfaiate, Ostraceiro and several gull species can be seen all year round. Also regularly more special species can be observed such as Pilrito-falcinelo, Maçarico-galego and Pintarroxo-de-bico-amarelo. Because the birds can sometimes be far away, a spotting scope is of great value here.

Nederlands: Tijdens vloed verzamelen de wadvogels zich bij Zwarte Haan op een hoogwatervluchtplaats. Veel verschillende steltloper- en eendensoorten te zien, soms met tienduizenden tegelijk. In winter en voorjaar worden groepen met duizenden Pilrito-comum, Maçarico-real of Marrequinha-comum gemeld. Ook Ganso-de-faces-negras en Arrabio zijn er in die periode volop. Jaarrond zijn bijvoorbeeld te zien Pato-branco, Alfaiate, Ostraceiro, meeuwensoorten etc. Ook geregeld meer bijzondere soorten als Pilrito-falcinelo, Maçarico-galego of Pintarroxo-de-bico-amarelo. Omdat de vogels ver weg kunnen zitten, is een telescoop hier van grote waarde.

Zwarte Haan is located at the base of the Wadden Sea dike. There is a (small) parking area available. Press P on the map for directions. Pedestrians can pass through the gate to climb the dike. Only permit holders are allowed to drive onto the dike. You can walk along the dike for a while to view the salt marshes in the direction of the Noarderleech. Keep an eye on the tide — as it rises, the birds move closer to the dike (see the link to the tide table below).

Nederlands: Zwarte Haan ligt aan de voet van de Waddenzeedijk. Er is een (kleine) parkeerplaats. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Voetgangers kunnen door het hek verder om de dijk te beklimmen. Alleen vergunninghouders mogen met de auto de dijk op. Je kunt een eind langs de dijk lopen om de kwelders richting het Noarderleech te bekijken. Houdt het tij in de gaten, als de vloed opkomt, komen de vogels steeds dichter bij de dijk (zie link naar de getijdetabel onderaan).
