The Weerterbos is an interesting place for birding because of the variety in the area. The large forest of 800 hectares is one of the few places in the Netherlands where red deer can be seen. The woods are interesting in spring and summer for breeding birds such as Bico-grossudo, Felosa-assobiadeira, Pica-pau-mediano en Bútio-vespeiro. At the fens there is a chance of regionally interesting species such as Abetouro-comum and Cegonha-preta. The forest is also interesting for butterflies.

Nederlands: Het Weerterbos is een interessante plek door de afwisseling in het gebied. Het is een groot aaneengesloten bos van 800 hectare met enkele vennen en een open gebied in het midden, dat goed te bekijken is vanuit een uitzichttoren. Het is een van de weinige plekken in Nederland waar edelherten kunnen worden gezien. In voorjaar en zomer interessant voor broedvogels als Bico-grossudo, Felosa-assobiadeira, Pica-pau-mediano en Bútio-vespeiro. Bij de vennen kans op regionaal interessante soorten als Abetouro-comum en Cegonha-preta. Het bos is ook voor dagvlinders interessant door aanwezigheid van Bont dikkopje, Spiegeldikkopje en Kleine ijsvogelvlinder.

Easily accessible from the A2 motorway, exit 38, to the north (Hoogbosweg). You can park at the Daatjeshoeve (Heugterbroekdijk 34) on the southeast side of the forest. From there you can follow (marked) walks. The lakes to the east of the Daatjeshoeve (follow the unpaved path of the Hoogbosweg) and the watchtower at the Grashutdijk are beautiful places to go with a chance of seeing the species mentioned. The walking route on the map is about 8 km.

Nederlands: Goed bereikbaar van autosnelweg A2, afrit 38, naar het noorden (Hoogbosweg). Parkeren kan bij de Daatjeshoeve (Heugterbroekdijk 34) aan de zuidoostkant van het bos. Van daaruit zijn (uitgezette) wandelingen te volgen. De plassen ten oosten van de Daatjeshoeve (onverharde pad van de Hoogbosweg volgen) en de uitkijktoren bij de Grashutdijk zijn fraaie plekken om heen te gaan met kans op genoemde soorten. De wandelroute die is aangegeven op de kaart is ongeveer 8 km.
