The Vliehors is a huge nature reserve on the west side of Vlieland. It is a kind of widened beach of about 24 square kilometers. Nowhere in Europe can you find a larger sandbank. The Vliehors is largely used as a military training area for the Dutch air force. As a result, the Vliehors is only freely accessible at weekends when the red flag has been lowered. The views of the wide sand plain are impressive. You can explore the Vliehors on foot or book a ticket for the Vliehors Expres (see link below), a beach bus that offers excursions all year round. Walking is the best option to really observe the birds, but it is a long walk. On the huge expanse of sand you have a chance to see typical beach birds such as Borrelho-de-coleira-interrompida, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Andorinha-do-mar-anã and Andorinha-do-mar-árctica, but also many waders and you can sometimes see seals on the west point.

Nederlands: De Vliehors is een enorme zandplaat aan de westkant van Vlieland. Het is een soort verbreed strand van ongeveer 24 vierkante kilometer. Nergens in Europa is er een grotere zandplaat te vinden. De Vliehors is voor een groot deel in gebruik als militair oefenterrein voor de Nederlandse luchtmacht. Hierdoor is de Vliehors alleen vrij toegankelijk in het weekend als de rode vlag is gestreken. De vergezichten op de grote zandvlakte zijn indrukwekkend. Je kunt de Vliehors te voet verkennen of een ticket boeken voor de Vliehors Expres (zie link beneden), een strandbus die het hele jaar door excursies aanbiedt. Om vogels in alle rust te bekijken is wandelen uiteraard de beste optie. Nadeel is dat de afstanden die je te voet moet afleggen behoorlijk groot zijn. Op de enorme zandvlakte heb je kans op het zien van typische strandvogels als Borrelho-de-coleira-interrompida, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Andorinha-do-mar-anã en Andorinha-do-mar-árctica, maar ook veel wadvogels en steltlopers kun je er zien en vaak zeehonden op de westpunt.

Acesso
Vlieland can be reached by ferry from Harlingen (see link for ferry tickets below). Several boats leave per day and the crossing takes about an hour and a half. The Vliehors is located on the west side of Vlieland. PLEASE NOTE: the Vliehors is only freely accessible at weekends when the red flag has been lowered. On Vlieland, no cars are allowed, so you have to get here by bike or island bus. The bus brings you right to restaurant Posthuys at the beginning of the Kroonspolders. From the Posthuys, continue cycling (or walking) to the end of the Polderweg until the Reddingbootpad and from there on foot. Click on the P in the map for directions to the starting point of the walk. The circular walk indicated on the map is approximately 17 km. Another option is to book an excursion at the Vliehors Expres (see link below).

Nederlands: De Vliehors ligt aan de westkant van Vlieland. LET OP: de Vliehors is alleen vrij toegankelijk in het weekend als de rode vlag is gestreken. Op Vlieland zijn geen auto's toegestaan, dus je moet met de fiets of eilandbus naar deze westpunt van het eiland komen. De bus brengt je tot bij restaurant Posthuys aan het begin van de Kroonspolders. Vanaf daar doorfietsen (of als je met de bus bent gekomen lopen) naar het einde van de Polderweg tot bij het Reddingbootpad en van daaruit verder te voet. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de startplek van de wandeling. De rondwandeling die op de kaart is aangegeven is ongeveer 17 km. Andere optie is een excursie boeken bij de Vliehors Expres (zie link beneden).
