The former island of Schokland has wetlands on the east side. Meadow and marsh birds make good use of this so-called 'hydrological zone'. The groundwater level is raised with the construction of supply ditches and the construction of dikes on the south and east sides of Schokland. This wetting ensures that the archaeological finds are preserved in the soil. However, the wetting has also given an enormous boost to biodiversity. In spring and summer, it is teeming with meadow - and swamp birds and dragonflies and butterflies! The part between the old harbor (with Terp Oud Emmeloord) and Museum Schokland is most interesting for meadow and marsh birds. Here is a beautiful wetland area with many waders. The new wet grasslands provide a beautiful nature reserve with excellent opportunities for Maçarico-de-bico-direito, Abibe-comum, Perna-vermelha-comum, Marreco and other meadow birds. Even Colhereiro, Garça-branca-grande and Tartaranhão-azulado have discovered this new nature reserve. During the breeding season (15 Mar-15 July) you are not allowed to walk near the old harbor. You can also take a walk through the Schokkerbos. This 85 hectare forest is located along the west side of the former island. The forest is over 50 years old and consists mainly of ash, oak and coniferous trees. Here you can find birds such as Pica-pau-malhado-grande, Açor, Gavião da Europa and Bufo-pequeno, but also many songbirds.

Nederlands: Het voormalige eiland Schokland is een verrassende vogebestemming. Schokland wordt aan de oostkant kunstmatig nat gehouden om bodemschatten te conserveren. Weide- en moerasvogels maken dankbaar gebruik van deze zogenoemde 'hydrologische zone' rondom Schokland. Met de aanleg van aanvoersloten en de bouw van dijkjes aan de zuid - en oostkant van Schokland wordt de grondwaterstand verhoogd. Deze vernatting zorgt ervoor dat bodemdaling wordt tegengegaan en dat de archeologische vondsten in de bodem bewaard blijven. De vernatting heeft echter ook een enorme impuls gegeven aan de biodiversiteit. In het voorjaar en de zomer wemelt het hier van de weide - en moeras vogels en libellen en vlinders! Het gedeelte tussen de haven (met Terp Oud Emmeloord) en Museum Schokland (Terp Middelbuurt) is het meest interessant voor weide- en moerasvogels. Hier ligt een mooi plas-drasgebied met veel steltlopers. De nieuwe natte graslanden leveren een prachtig natuurgebied op met uitstekende kansen voor grutto, kievit, tureluur, zomertaling en andere weidevogels. Zelfs lepelaar, grote zilverreiger en blauwe kiekendief hebben dit nieuwe natuurgebied ontdekt. Nabij de oude haven mag binnen het broedseizoen (15 mrt-15 juli) niet gewandeld worden. Ook aardig om mee te pakken is het Schokkerbos. Dit bos van 85 hectare ligt langs de westzijde van het voormalige eiland. Het bos is ruim 50 jaar oud en bestaat voornamelijk uit essen, eiken en naaldbomen. Je kunt hier vogels als grote bonte specht, havik, buizerd, sperwer en ransuil aantreffen, maar ook veel zangvogels.

A cycle path runs along the edge of the former island, from north to south or from harbor to museum, along the entire 'hydrological zone'. From here there is a good view of the area. You can also take a 10 km circular walk through the entire area (see the route on the map). Click on a P in the map for directions to that parking space.

Nederlands: Er loopt een fietspad over de rand van het eiland, van noord naar zuid ofwel van haven tot museum, langs de hele 'hydrologische zone'. Van hieruit is goed zicht op het gebied.
