The forest of Schiermonnikooger Bos consists of planted pine forest and naturally occurring deciduous forest. The Von Bernstorff family (the last private owner of the island) had pine forests planted for timber production at the beginning of the last century. Next to the planted forest, deciduous forest with many birch trees has spontaneously developed. In the monotonous areas of coniferous forest you will not find many birds, but in the lower and wetter parts with many birches you can find quite a few forest birds and at dusk you have a good chance of seeing Galinhola. Birds you may encounter in the woods include Pica-pau-malhado-grande, Papa-moscas-cinzento, Rabirruivo-de-testa-branca, Felosa-das-figueiras, Toutinegra-de-barrette-preto, Chapim-preto and pintarroxo-pequeno.

Nederlands: De bossen van Schiermonnikoog bestaan uit aangeplant dennenbos en van nature ontstaan loofbos. De familie Von Bernstorff (de laatste particulaire eigenaar van het eiland) liet in het begin van de vorige eeuw dennenbossen aanplanten voor houtproductie. In de luwte van het aangeplante bos zijn spontaan loofbossen ontstaan met veel berken. In de monotone stukken naaldbos tref je niet zo heel veel vogels, maar in de lagere en nattere delen met veel berken kun je nog aardig wat bosvogels vinden en in de schemering heb je er een goede kans om Galinhola te zien. Vogels die je in het bos kunt tegenkomen zijn onder meer Pica-pau-malhado-grande, Papa-moscas-cinzento, Rabirruivo-de-testa-branca, Felosa-das-figueiras, Toutinegra-de-barrette-preto, Chapim-preto en pintarroxo-pequeno.

The forest is located directly northeast of the village of Schiermonnikoog. You can walk there straight from the village. There are various cycle paths and walking paths through the forest. The most beautiful paths are the Berkenpad and the Kronkelpad. On the map below, these trails are combined into a circular walk of approximately 3 km. If you want to explore the forest by bike, you can do so via the Berkenpad, which is also a cycle path.

Nederlands: De bossen liggen direct ten noordoosten van het dorp Schiermonnikoog. Je loopt er vanuit het dorp zo naar toe. Er lopen diverse fietspaden en wandelpaden door het bos. Mooiste paden zijn het Berkenpad en het Kronkelpad. Op de onderstaande kaart zijn de paden gecombineerd tot een rondwandeling van ongeveer 3 km. Wil je het bos met de fiets verkennen, dan kun dat doen via het Berkenpad wat tevens een fietspad is.
