The Ommeloop nature reserve, northwest of Brielle, used to be by the sea. Brackish groundwater is still breaking through to the surface. Due to the low location and the salty seepage, special, salt-loving plants feel right at home here. No fewer than 75 different species grow there. The wet nature in this small area of 4 hectares attracts also quite a few birds. On the wet grasslands and in the reed beds you can find birds like Abibe-comum, Narceja-comum, Pássaro-bique-bique, Abetouro-comum, alvéola-amarela, Felosa-dos-juncos and Escrevedeira-dos-caniços.

Nederlands: Natuurgebied de Ommeloop, ten noordwesten van Brielle, lag vroeger aan zee. Nog steeds breekt er brak grondwater door naar de oppervlakte. Door de lage ligging en de zoute kwel voelen bijzondere, zoutminnende planten zich hier goed thuis. Er groeien maar liefst 75 verschillende soorten. De natte natuur in dit kleine gebied van 4 hectare trekt aardig wat vogels aan. Op de natte graslanden en in de rietkragen kun je vogels vinden als Abibe-comum, Narceja-comum, Pássaro-bique-bique, Abetouro-comum, alvéola-amarela, Felosa-dos-juncos en Escrevedeira-dos-caniços.

The Ommeloop is located to the left and right of the Katteweg in Oostvoorne near the Brielse Maas. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking lot. The Ommeloop can be entered via an experience route, not via a path, but straight through the site along posts of the 'barefoot route'. Dogs are not welcome in the Ommeloop.

Nederlands: De Ommeloop ligt links en rechts van de Katteweg te Oostvoorne bij de Brielse Maas. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar een parkeerplaats. Via een belevingsroute is de Ommeloop te betreden, niet via een pad, maar dwars door het terrein langs paaltjes van de ‘blotevoetenroute’. Honden zijn in de Ommeloop niet welkom.

From the Ommeloop you can see the Stenen Baak, the first stone lighthouse in the Netherlands, built in 1630. On top of the tower, an open fire served as a beacon for the ships that sailed to Den Briel. The tower can be climbed.
