There are few places on this planet where a birdwatcher can witness a mass concentration of over a hundred thousand waders in their summer plumage. Westhoek is such a place. If you choose your visit carefully in May or (preferably) between the third week of July and the first week of September. You have to watch the tide (see the link below for the tides) to make sure you arrive at Westhoek 2 – 1,5 hours before high tide. As you wait at the transition between glasswort and mudflat, you will first see the masses of waders at over a kilometre distance. But as the tide slowly comes in the birds will come closer and closer, until you have tens of thousands of waders foraging right at your feed. The majority will consist of Pilrito-comum, Pilrito-de-bico-comprido, Tarambola-cinzenta, Fuselo, Pilrito-sanderlingo, Pilrito-pequeno, Alfaiate, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira and Maçarico-real, but among the masses of common waders rarities like Falaropo-de-bico-fino, Pilrito-falcinelo or even an American vagrant could be found. Witnessing such a sheer mass of birds from such a short distance is an experience that will stay with you forever.

Nederlands: Er zijn maar weinig plaatsen op deze planeet waar een vogelaar getuige kan zijn van een massaconcentratie van meer dan honderdduizend steltlopers in hun zomerkleed. Westhoek aan de Waddenzee is zo'n plek. Als je een bezoek zorgvuldig plant in mei of (bij voorkeur) tussen de derde week van juli en de eerste week van september. Je moet wel op het getij letten (zie de link beneden voor de actuele getijden) om ervoor te zorgen dat je 2 - 1,5 uur voor hoogwater in de Westhoek aankomt. Terwijl je wacht op de overgang tussen zeekraal en wad, zie je eerst de massa steltlopers op meer dan een kilometer afstand. Maar als het tij langzaam opkomt, zullen de vogels steeds dichterbij komen, totdat je tienduizenden steltlopers hebt die vlak bij je foerageren. De meerderheid zal bestaan uit Pilrito-comum, Pilrito-de-bico-comprido, Tarambola-cinzenta, Fuselo, Pilrito-sanderlingo, Pilrito-pequeno, Alfaiate, Borrelho-grande-de-coleiraen Maçarico-real, maar onder de massa gewone steltlopers kunnen ook zeldzaamheden als Falaropo-de-bico-fino en Pilrito-falcinelo voorkomen of zelfs een Amerikaanse dwaalgast. Getuige zijn van zo'n enorme massa vogels vanaf zo'n korte afstand is een ervaring die je voor altijd bij zal blijven.

You can park at the small car park adjacent to the dike just outside Westhoek (See the P on the map), near the Gaya Indonesia Restaurant. Cross the dike and follow the small track through the reeds until you reach the base off the mudflats. Position yourself at the transition from reeds to glasswort.

Nederlands: Je kunt parkeren op het kleine parkeerterrein naast de dijk net buiten de Westhoek (zie de P op de kaart), vlakbij het Gaya Indonesia Restaurant. Steek de dijk over en volg het kleine pad door het riet tot aan de voet van het wad. Ga op de overgang van riet naar zeekraal staan.
