On the banks of the Markiezaatsmeer you can find marshes, reed and willow groves. Grazing with cattle (only in the summer half-year) and horses (all year round) prevents the entire area from being forested simultaneously and monotonously. It is one of the five most important bird areas in the Netherlands. However, in the majority of the nature reserve no visitors are allowed and therefore it is often difficult to spot the slightly more shy species. Among the interesting birds you can see here are Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis, Pato-de-bico-vermelho, Frango-d'água, Mergulhão-pequeno, Perna-verde-comum and Cartaxo-comum.

Nederlands: Door de Deltawerken is hier een zoutwater moerasgebied ontstaan. Dit stukje natuur is aangewezen als Natura-2000 gebied. Aan de oevers van het Markiezaatsmeer zijn moerassen, riet en wilgenbosjes te vinden. Door begrazing met runderen (alleen in het halfjaar van de zomer) en paarden (het hele jaar door) wordt voorkomen dat het hele gebied gelijktijdig en eentonig verbost. Het behoort tot de vijf belangrijkste vogelgebieden van Nederland. In het overgrote deel van het natuurgebied zijn echter geen bezoekers toegelaten en daardoor is het vaak moeilijk om de iets schuwere soorten te spotten.

The area can be reached via the Fianestraat in Bergen op Zoom. Two walking routes start at the Kraaijenberg visitor center there. Click on the P in the map for directions to the P.
