The Lauwersmeer area is a relatively new nature reserve. Fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam in 1969. A beautiful new landscape was created on the former seabed, a real bird paradise. The nature in the Lauwersmeer is so special that the area has been designated as a National Park. There is a lot of variation in the vegatation, which also makes the area special for many different birds. Many birds can be seen here all year round. Migratory birds and wanderers are also often seen here. There are also many birds in the surrounding reed fields.

Nederlands: Het Jaap Deensgat in Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer is een fantastische plek om het hele jaar door vogels te kijken. Het Lauwersmeergebied is een relatief nieuw natuurgebied. Angst voor overstromingen leidde in 1969 tot de bouw van een dam. Op de voormalige zeebodem ontstond een prachtig nieuw landschap, een echt vogelparadijs. De natuur in het Lauwersmeer is zo bijzonder dat het gebied is aangewezen als Nationaal Park. Er zit veel variatie in de vegetatie, wat het gebied ook aantrekkelijk maakt voor veel verschillende vogels. Het hele jaar door zijn hier veel vogels te zien. Trekvogels en dwaalgasten worden hier vaak gezien. De omliggende rietvelden zijn ook zeker de moeite waard om af te speuren op vogels.

You can park the car near the observation hide. From there it is a five minute walk. There are many beautiful places nearby, also easily accessible by car. The best thing is to leave the car near the cabin and continue cycling.

Nederlands: Je kunt de auto parkeren vlakbij bij de vogelkijkhut. Vanaf daar is het nog vijf minuten lopen. Er zijn veel mooie plekjes in de buurt, ook met de auto goed bereikbaar. Maar het is een ook goed idee om een fiets mee te nemen. Het beste is om de auto bij de kijkhut te laten staan en verder te fietsen.
