Water from the dunes runs towards the south point of Texel. Het Grote Vlak consists of a few lakes in this water course.

Het Grote Vlak often holds a lot of ducks ( Pato-trombeteiro , Frisada , Arrabio , Pato-branco , Piadeira and in spring Marreco ), gulls and grebes. Sometimes waders, like Maçarico-de-bico-direito , are abundant and few songbirds, like Petinha-ribeirinha and Cartaxo-comum (sometimes even Pisco-de-peito-azul ), can be found. The area is also good for finding Pombo-bravo , Chasco-cinzento and in winter Búteo-calçado .

Het Grote Vlak is easily accessible from the village of Den Hoorn towards the beach. You can park on the roadside, but try to give way to cyclists on the parallel cycle path.
