Great spot for "urban" birding. Especially in winter when impressive numbers of Piadeira (2000-3000) and other waterbirds aggregate here. I have have been a counter for SOVON (Dutch Centre for Field Ornithology) in this area for several years and these are among my special observations: Pato-de-cauda-afilada, Mobêlha-pequena, Mobêlha-árctica, Falaropo-de-bico-grosso, Pelicano-vulgar, Mergulhão-pequeno, Mergulhão-de-pescoço-preto, Mergulhão-de-pescoço-ruivo and Pato-olho-d'ouro.

Nederlands: Voor de stadsuitbreiding van Utrecht (Leidsche Rijn) werd zand gewonnen uit twee gaten die nu de oostelijke en westelijke wateren vormen. Geweldige plek voor vogels kijken in een stedelijke omgeving. Vooral in de winter, wanneer hier indrukwekkende aantallen Piadeira (2000-3000) en andere watervogels samenkomen. You can reach the area by car. There are several parking spots nearby. The area itself is only accesible by foot. Only a short walk to the observation shelter on the southwest bank of the western lake.
