De Malpie is a nature reserve with open heathland, moist grasslands and various small but also large fens such as the Groot Malpieven. This attracts many species of birds, but also dragonflies and butterflies. Birds that you may encounter include the Cartaxo-comum, Cotovia-pequena, Pisco-de-peito-azul, Petinha-das-árvores, Pintarroxo-comum, Mergulhão-pequeno, Zarro-comum, Zarro-negrinha and Escrevedeira-dos-caniços. The former production forest, used for mining, has been transformed into a more natural deciduous forest. There you can hear and see different woodpecker species and, if you are lucky, sometimes Cruza-bico-comum. In winter you can often see a Picanço-grande on the heath.

Nederlands: De Malpie is een natuurgebied bij Valkenswaard. Het bestaat uit ongeveer 350 hectare aan stuifzanden, natte en droge heide, vennen en bos. Het open heidegebied met vochtige graslanden en diverse kleine maar ook grote vennen zoals het Groot Malpieven, trekt vele soorten vogels aan, maar ook libellen en vlinders. Vogels die je kunt tegenkomen zijn onder meer de Cartaxo-comum, Cotovia-pequena, Pisco-de-peito-azul, Petinha-das-árvores, Pintarroxo-comum, Mergulhão-pequeno, Zarro-comum, Zarro-negrinha en Escrevedeira-dos-caniços. Het voormalig productiebos, gebruikt voor de mijnbouw, is omgevormd naar een natuurlijker loofbos. Daar kun je verschillende spechtensoorten en andere bosvogels horen en zien en maar als je geluk hebt ook soms Cruza-bico-comum. In de winter zit er vaak een Picanço-grande op de heide.

You can park in the parking lot of Natuurpoort De Malpie, Molenstraat 211, 5556 TA, Valkenswaard. This parking lot is on the right just before the Venbergse watermill. Click on the P in the map for directions. If the parking lot is closed, there is also a small parking lot in the woods. Follow the road until it bends to the right. In this bend keep left onto the wide gravel path, a little further on is the parking lot on the left. The circular walk on the map is about 7 km long and takes you past the most beautiful places. You can easily make the walk longer, there are many hiking trails to choose from. Parts of the area can also be reached by bicycle.

Nederlands: Parkeren kan op het parkeerterrein van Natuurpoort De Malpie, Molenstraat 211, 5556 TA, Valkenswaard. Dit parkeerterrein is aan rechterhand iets voor de Venbergse watermolen. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Indien het parkeerterrein gesloten is verderop is ook een klein parkeerterrein in de bossen. De weg verder volgen tot bocht naar rechts. In deze bocht links aanhouden het brede grindpad inrijden, iets verder is aan linkerhand het parkeerterreintje. De rondwandeling op de kaart is ongeveer 7 km lang en voert je langs de mooiste plekken. Je kun de wandeling gemakkelijk langer maken, er zijn veel wandelpaden om uit te kiezen. Delen van het gebied zijn ook per fiets bereikbaar.
