The Rusen ponds cover a large area of reedbeds, open and closed ponds and Salix bushes and trees. In the main pond (nr 1) a colony of Guincho-comum also harbouring Gaivina-preta , along with them Gaivina-de-faces-brancas, Gaivina-d'asa-branca and Gaivina-de-bico-vermelho can be seen.
Also living in the ponds Mergulhão-pequeno and Mergulhão-de-pescoço-preto together with a good variety of ducks such as Pato-trombeteiro and Marreco. From the reedbeds Abetouro-comum, Felosa-unicolor and Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços can be heard together with Chapim-de-bigode and Chapim-de-faces-pretas.
You move through the area on top of the banks and there are a good number of roads to explore the site.
