Descrição

Birding in Dana Nature Reserve offers a unique experience thanks to its diverse landscapes and rich birdlife. The reserve spans a variety of habitats - from Mediterranean woodlands and rocky cliffs to arid desert - creating a haven for both migratory and resident bird species. Over 215 species have been recorded here, making it one of the most important birding destinations in the region.

Special birds to spot include the globally threatened Syrian Serin, Sooty Falcon, and migrant Steppe Eagle, which pass through the area during migration. The reserve is strategically positioned along the Rift Valley–Red Sea flyway, making it a critical stopover for migratory birds traveling between Africa, Europe, and Asia.

For birders, Dana offers not only rare and endangered species but also a chance to witness the stunning beauty of Jordan’s landscapes, from towering cliffs to deep canyons, all while spotting birds in their natural habitats. Whether you're an experienced birder or a nature lover, Dana is a must-visit destination.

Detalhes

Acesso

Dana Nature Reserve is located in southern Jordan near the village of Dana. it is the country’s largest protected area and one of its most ecologically diverse. It lies roughly 190 kilometers south of Amman, and the easiest way to reach it is by car. Either via the Desert Highway (Route 15) or the more scenic King’s Highway (Route 35). While public transportation options exist, they are limited; visitors can take a bus to nearby towns such as Tafilah or Ma’an and then continue by taxi or local minibus to Dana Village. However, renting a car remains the most convenient option, especially if you want the flexibility to explore the area at your own pace. Parking is available near the village, especially around guesthouses and trailheads.

Once at the reserve, the best way to experience its landscapes and birdlife is on foot. Dana offers a range of hiking trails, from short loops like the Rummana Mountain Trail to longer routes such as the Wadi Dana Trail (indicated on the map below), which stretches from the village down to Feynan Ecolodge. Hiking allows visitors to get close to the reserve’s unique flora and fauna. While biking is possible in some parts of the reserve, and cars can be useful for reaching more remote trailheads, walking remains the most immersive and rewarding way to explore.

A day trip is enough to enjoy a short hike, but spending two or three days is ideal if you want to explore multiple trails, do some serious birding, or simply soak in the serene atmosphere.
