Lake Massaciuccoli is a coastal lagoon. Nowadays the lake is entirely a freshwater lake. This represents the most important wetland of Tuscany. The naturalistic path within the Nature Reserve consists of a wooden walkway on stilts for a length of about 800 meters. Short branches lead to the four observatories, two of which overlook the lake, the other two observatories overlook the reedbeds. At the end of the path you can reach an additional raised observatory and a characteristic "garden for butterflies".
The Nature Reserve also offers several possibilities of excursion on the water, by boat or in canoe. Due to its special location this is an exceptional place for migratory birds. The lake and nature reserve are home to many species in all seasons. Some of the interesting birds that can be seen are Águia-pesqueira, Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis, Abetouro-comum, Garça-pequena, Garça-branca-pequena, Garca-vaqueira, Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços, Felosa-real and Chapim-de-faces-pretas.

Italiano: Il Lago di Massaciuccoli è una laguna costiera. Oggi il lago è interamente un lago di acqua dolce. Rappresenta la più importante zona umida della Toscana. Il sentiero naturalistico all'interno della Riserva Naturale è costituito da una passerella in legno su palafitte per una lunghezza di circa 800 metri. Brevi diramazioni conducono ai quattro osservatori, due dei quali si affacciano sul lago, gli altri due osservatori si affacciano sui canneti. Al termine del sentiero si può raggiungere un ulteriore osservatorio sopraelevato e un caratteristico "giardino delle farfalle".
La Riserva Naturale offre anche diverse possibilità di escursioni in acqua, in barca o in canoa. Grazie alla sua posizione privilegiata, è un luogo privilegiato per gli uccelli migratori. Il lago e la riserva naturale ospitano numerose specie in tutte le stagioni.

To get to the Reserve you need to travel the A12 Genoa-Livorno motorway and go out to the tollbooth of Pisa Nord. Just entered on the Aurelia turn immediately on the right in Via Traversagna and travel about 7 kilometers following the directions to Massaciuccoli and to the Reserve. You can park the car at the visitors centre. Click on the P in the map to get directions.

Italiano: Per raggiungere la Riserva è necessario percorrere l'autostrada A12 Genova-Livorno e uscire al casello di Pisa Nord. Appena entrati sull'Aurelia svoltare subito a destra in Via Traversagna e percorrere circa 7 chilometri seguendo le indicazioni per Massaciuccoli e per la Riserva. È possibile parcheggiare l'auto presso il centro visitatori. Cliccare sulla P nella mappa per ottenere le indicazioni stradali.
