The lakes are surrounded by marshy vegetation and Mediterranean scrub that extends across much of the limestone ridges. Five basins are named: Lake Preola, the Murana marsh, and the upper, middle, and lower gorges. It's an excellent place for birdwatching year-round, especially during migration. In addition to aquatic species such as ducks, herons, and waders, you can observe many birds of prey: the Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis, the Águia-d'asa-redonda, the Águia-pomarina, and the Gavião da Europa. The presence of the Caimão is also noteworthy.

Italiano: Gli specchi d'acqua sono circondati da cordoni di vegetazione palustre e macchia mediterranea che si estende su buona parte dei costoni calcarenitici. Cinque bacini denominati: lago Preola, pantano Murana e i gorghi alto, medio, basso. E' un ottimo posto per fare birdwatching tutto l'anno, specialmente durante le migrazioni. Oltre alle specie acquatiche quali anatidi, aironi e limicoli è possibile osservare molti rapaci: Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis , Águia-d'asa-redonda , Águia-calçada e Gavião da Europa . Degna di nota è la presenza del Caimão .

The Reserve is approximately 4 km from the city of Mazara del Vallo and is signposted.
Coming from Palermo, leave the A-29 Palermo-Mazara motorway at the Campobello di Mazara junction and take the S.S. 115 towards Mazara del Vallo. At km 57, leave the state road and turn left onto Provincial Road No. 85. From here, follow the signs for the Reserve.
From Mazara del Vallo, you can reach it by taking the S.S. 115 towards Campobello di Mazara. After approximately 4 km, the SS 115 intersects with the S.P. No. 85. From here, follow the signs for the Reserve.

Italiano: La Riserva dista circa 4 Km dalla città Mazara del Vallo ed è indicata dall’apposita segnaletica.
Provenendo da Palermo lasciare la A-29 Palermo Mazara allo svincolo per Campobello di Mazara, per la S.S. 115 in direzione Mazara del Vallo. All’altezza del Km 57 lasciare la statale ed immettersi (a sinistra) sulla Strada Provinciale n.85, da qui seguire la segnaletica della Riserva.
Da Mazara del Vallo si può raggiungere percorrendo la S.S. 115 in direzione Campobello di Mazara. Dopo circa 4 Km, la SS 115 incrocia Ia S.P. n. 85, da qui seguire la segnaletica della Riserva.

The RNI Preola and Gorghi Tondi Lake Reserve falls within the SCI (Site of Community Importance) ITA010005 "Preola and Gorghi Tondi Lakes, Sciare di Mazara" and the SPA (Special Protection Area) ITA010031 "Preola and Gorghi Tondi Lakes, Sciare di Mazara and Pantano Leone." It has been listed as an Import Bird Area (IBA) and a Ramsar Area since 2011. The Garça-pequena is the reserve's flagship species. Among the waterfowl species, the Zarro-castanho and the Pato-de-bico-vermelho nest here.

Tra gli anatidi da segnalare la nidificazione della Zarro-castanho e del Pato-de-bico-vermelho.
