The area of Windknollen - close to the city of Jena - is a small mountain with a mosaic landscape containing mostly semi-dry short grass vegetation, temporarily water-filled depressions, bushes, mixed deciduous forest and isles of pine trees. Once a military training area it is now a little nature reserve (185 ha). Typical birds here are Laverca, Cotovia-pequena, Trigueirão, Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo and Cartaxo-comum. You can also easily find Escrevedeira-amarela, Pica-pau-cinzento , Chapim-preto, peneireiro-de-dorso-malhado / peneireiro Águia-d'asa-redonda and Milhafre-real.

You can access Windknollen only on foot from different directions, for example from the village of Closewitz or through Steingrund.
