The Weiherwald offers a great range of habitats (mixed alluvial woodland, shallow ponds, streams, ditches, meadows, gardens), all in a very small area and close to an urban environment. It is very accessible with paths for pedestrians and cyclists transecting the area. These paths have two benefits: they makes bird observations easy and also mean that the birds are not too shy. A circular walk of the location covers all the habitats mentioned above, with many variations and little detours possible.
There is a notable population of 20 or more Marrequinha-comum present here in winter (and well into spring).
The Weiherwald is great for observing and hearing Woodpeckers, with five species possible all year round: Pica-pau-mediano , Pica-pau-malhado-grande and Pica-pau-verde are common here and there is always a chance of Pica-pau-preto and Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno, especially in winter.
The shallow ponds and ditches attract Guarda-rios-comum, which can be seen fishing or flying from one area of water to another. Alvéola-cinzenta are sometimes present, foraging along the water's edges.
Small flocks of Chapim-rabilongo often roam the area, along with Lugre, Bico-grossudo and the occasional Tordo-ruivo-comum in winter.
Late spring is a great time to listen to Papa-figos, Rouxinol-comum and Felosa-musical. With a bit of luck Papa-moscas-preto can also be seen.
Other birds present all year round include Estrelinha-de-cabeça-listada, Trepadeira-azul, Trepadeira-comum and Chapim-palustre.
In addition to the fantastic birdlife, the Weiherwald is also a hotspot for many (rare) amphibians and insects. No matter what time of year or day, there's always something to enjoy here!
