The barrage at Staustufe Ingolstadt causes the Danube to widen considerably and slow down the flow speed. Here the Danube is more like a reservoir and that is ideal for some water birds to spend the winter at this place. Also there is a small island that attracts birds. Among the birds you can encounter are Frisada, Piadeira, Pato-de-bico-vermelho, Zarro-comum, Zarro-negrinha, Pato-olho-d'ouro, Merganso-grande and Merganso-de-poupa.
