The developement of Rickelsbüller Koog Nature Reserve started in 1981 when the former salt marshes were artificially disconnected from the North Sea. The current wetland meadows with low vegetation are breeding sites for Perna-vermelha-comum , Maçarico-de-bico-direito , Combatente , Gaivota-argêntea , Ganso-de-faces-brancas and Alfaiate.
From autumn to early spring, the dyked area and the adjacent salt marshes on the dyke's sea-ward side are resting sites of Ganso-de-faces-brancas , Ganso-de-faces-negras , Seixoeira , Pilrito-comum Maçarico-real and Piadeira . Observation possibilities depend on the tides of the North Sea.
