With 1,427 hectares, the Regentalaue nature reserve between Cham and Pösing is the largest protected area in the Oberpfalz. The area includes the river Regen and the surrounding floodplains. During the melting of the snow, but also after prolonged rain, flooding often occurs. A colourful meadow landscape with ponds and flowing waters, wetlands and siltation zones. The area is an important breeding ground for bird species, such as the Mergulhão-de-pescoço-preto and various species of gulls, and an essential resting place for many migratory birds. Among the birds you can encounter are Maçarico-real, Maçarico-de-bico-direito, Abibe-comum, Cartaxo-nortenho, Perna-vermelha-comum, Gaivota-de-cabeça-preta, Pato-ferrugíneo, Pato-trombeteiro, Marrequinha-comum, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas and Maçarico-das-rochas.

The Regentalaue is located between Cham and Pösing. You can get there by train to Cham, then about 15 minutes on foot. By bike, park at the Rötelseeweiher. Observation at the Rötelseeweiher and the Anger and Lettenweiher. Click on a P in the map for directions.
There are bird hides and there is a 15 m high observation tower that offers a panoramic view over the wide floodplain. Several paths and roads run through the nature reserve. It is particularly important that the road rules that apply to protect the animals during the breeding and rearing seasons are observed. So if you are out and about in the nature reserve, please be sure to stay on the trails.
