The Nienwohlder Moor is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. The 398 hectare nature reserve lies northeast of Hamburg between the villages of Nienwohld, Nahe,Itzstedt and Sülfeld. It protects a drained and mostly gated high bog area, which is the largest and best preserved bog remnant in Schleswig-Holstein. It is now an open bog with numerous water-filled peat engravings surrounded by a bog forest in the area of former industrial use. The nature reserve is also an important habitat for birds. There are various waders such as Maçarico-real and Narceja-comum as well as ducks like Pato-trombeteiro, Marrequinha-comum, Marreco and Zarro-negrinha. Also many Petinha-das-árvores, Petinha-dos-prados and Cartaxo-comum. Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis and Picanço-grande can be found too. The moorland area is good for Grou-comum which are now breeding here again. In the wooded moorland areas you can find various woodpecker species and Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo and many songbirds.
