The special feature of nature reserve Heiliges Meer are the numerous large and small bodies of water, which were created over thousands of years as a result of sinkholes. Together with nutrient-poor heathland and alder marsh forest it combines various habitats close to each other. Because of all these different habitats in a small area the nature reserve also has a high diversity of bird species. Among the birds you can encounter are Cotovia-pequena, Petinha-das-árvores, Rabirruivo-de-testa-branca, Papa-figos, Bútio-vespeiro and Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno.

Nature reserve Heiliges Meer is located on the northwestern border of Westphalia with Lower Saxony, 30 km northwest of Osnabrück, between the towns of Obersteinbeck and Hopsten on the L 504 road. Drive towards Hopsten by car. There is a public car park on "Hugostraße". From there, two hiking trails can be walked. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 4 km. Sturdy shoes are helpful in wet weather.
