Over 300 bird species have been recorded in the area of Heerter See. They include Grou-comum, Águia-pesqueira, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas and Maçarico-das-rochas, who use the lake as a stepping stone on their way to wintering or breeding grounds. A 6 km hike around the Heerter See nature reserve and European bird sanctuary is a special experience for nature lovers. Its salty water provides habitat for special plant species and its shallow shores are ideal for waders.
