Descrição
Grube Gerolsheim is a disused gravel pit in the middle of the Rhine plain. It contains different habitats, including a long escarpment where Abelharuco-comum breeds. There are also reed beds and waterfowl and typical field and shrub birds live in the area. In the area you can also find deer, foxes and nutria. The site can be observed from a hide. The Abelharuco-comum sometimes come very close to the camera lenses.
Especially between mid-June and the end of August you have a chance to observe the colony of Abelharuco-comum. Other birds you can expect in the area are Rola-comum, rouxinol-dos-caniços, Galeirão-comum, Cuco-canoro, Pintassilgo, Pintarroxo-comum, Laverca and Toutinegra-de-barrette-preto.

Acesso
There are no parking facilities directly at the pit, so it is advised to use the parking lot at the Lambsheim cemetery. This is about 4 km from the pit. The resulting circular walk of 8 km leads through intensively used agricultural land, so it might be a good option to go by bike. If you explore the area on foot from Lambsheim, you should expect about 3 hours.
