The wet meadows of Elzwiesen are irrigated in March, August and November. End of March/ start of April and August are the best times to watch migrating birds on the flooded meadows. Common migrating spiecies are Maçarico-bastardo , Combatente , Perna-verde-comum , Guincho-comum and Marreco. Also rarer species like Colhereiro , Maçarico-galego and Maçarico-de-bico-direito can sometimes be found on the irrigated areas.
Breeding birds are Maçarico-real , Abibe-comum , Rouxinol-comum and Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo. Many Garça-branca-grande , Garça-real and Cegonha-branca can be observed feeding in the area. The meadows are irrigated in steps from south to north. So most times only one part of the area is flooded. Note that the area has limited access from March to June.
