Lake Barmener (Barmener See) was created as a result of large-scale gravel extraction in the valley of the river Rur. The gravel pit was then redesigned. The western shore is used for recreation, here is a sandy beach and boating recreation. The eastern bank is designated for nature. With a small island and resting areas for birds. The lake is a designated SAC (Special Area of Conservation / FFH-Gebiet). With its large water surface and its bird island, the Barmener See attracts mainly water birds. Especially in the winter months, all kinds of ducks visit the area. Then there are groups of Zarro-comum, Zarro-negrinha, Frisada and Marrequinha-comum. Rarities such as Merganso-grande and Merganso-pequeno are also sometimes present. Mergulhão-de-crista, Galeirão-comum and Cisne-vulgar are present throughout the year. Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas often hunt in groups. A dozen Garça-real breed on the island. Sometimes they are visited by Garça-branca-grande. Various Beavers also live around the Barmener See. The lake also has a bird hide on the eastern shore.

Regular but scarce visitors (almost annual): Socó-taquari, Felosa-poliglota, Arrabio.
Frequent highlights (multiple sightings per year): Pato-de-bico-vermelho, Rouxinol-bravo (present year-round), Frango-d'água, Narceja-comum, Maçarico-das-rochas, Pássaro-bique-bique, Águia-pesqueira, and Pato-trombeteiro.
Notable breeding birds in the area: Ógea, Papa-figos, Cuco-canoro, Pica-pau-mediano, Milhafre-real, Milhafre-preto, Rouxinol-comum, Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno, Corvo, Gavião da Europa, and Açor.
