The Aalkistensee Nature Reserve covers 50 hectare, the entire area of the lake and beyond. The nature reserve is of great importance for regional bird protection. Breeding birds include Frango-d'água, Mergulhão-pequeno, Felosa-palustre and Marrequinha-comum. Cartaxo-nortenho and Cartaxo-comum can be seen as migrants. Among the other birds you can see are Águia-pesqueira, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas, Milhafre-real and Milhafre-preto.

Car park south of the lake on the railway line, accessible from the road between Maulbronn and Ölbronn. Click on the P in the map to get directions. A circular path of 5 km runs from the parking lot down to the beginning of the dam, there to the east south of the lake, through the forest in a counter-clockwise direction around the lake. To see different habitats, a spotting scope is necessary for some birds.
