Over 1.000.000 migrating raptors pass through the Batumi Bottleneck each autumn from mid August until mid October. Shuamta is Batumi Raptor Count’s second count station. The watchpoint is situated on a ridge in between forested hills. The migration here is rather different from Batumi Raptor Count’s first count station Sakhalvasho. Shuamta is usually a better place to stand from the second part of September onwards. Many of the eagles take a more eastern route and pass over this station in greater numbers. In late September- early October, you get a pretty balanced mixture of Águia-gritadeira, Águia-pomarina, Águia-das-estepes, Águia-cobreira and Águia-imperial-oriental. Around this time you may also be lucky to experience a 100,000+ Steppe Buzzard day. These often form huge ‘kettles’ above the mountains to the east, mixed with eagles, Cegonha-preta and Milhafre-preto.

The Shuamta viewpoint is located about 20 km north of Batumi (about a 45 minute drive). From the village of Chaisubani follow the signs 'Raptor viewpoint'. Note that the signage is not always clear and Shuamta can be hard to find by yourself. Also it is not very easy to drive because part of the road is a gravel road in pretty bad condition. So arranging local transport might be the best idea. When you arrive in a tiny village in the middle of the forested hills, it is a walk of another 10 to 15 minutes. A 4x4 can get you closer to the watchpoint, which reduces the walk by half. At the site, you will find a toilet, several viewpoints, a watching platform, and a lightning-proof shelter. There is also a small bar, but opening hours and days vary, so always make sure you have something to eat and drink with you.
Note that Batumi Raptor Count’s first count station Sakhalvasho is closer to Batumi and easier to get to. Sakhalvasho also has more facilities and has a bigger platform to watch from. So if you are short on time a visit to Sakhalvasho is the best option.

Batumi Raptor Count, or BRC, is a nature conservation NGO that works to monitor and conserve the 1,000,000+ birds of prey that migrate every autumn through the Batumi Bottleneck. A young and forward thinking organisation, BRC has been operating from the Black Sea City of Batumi, in the Republic of Georgia, ever since 2008 when it has started the raptor-migration count covering the full autumn season.
