Garca-vaqueira Borrelho-pequeno-de-coleira The Marais salants de La Couarde are traditional salt pans located on the Île de Ré. The salt pans are part of a centuries-old tradition of salt production, where seawater is channeled into shallow ponds and allowed to evaporate, leaving behind salt crystals. The area attracts water birds and waders such as Garça-branca-pequena, Pernilongo, Pato-branco, Maçarico-das-rochas, Perna-verde-comum, Perna-vermelha-comum, Gaivota-de-cabeça-preta and Andorinha-do-mar-comum.

Acesso
The Marais de la Couarde is located on the Île de Ré between the villages of La Couarde-sur-Mer and Loix. You can walk or cycle around the area (about 7 km). Part of the route runs over elevated boardwalks. Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot. If you don't want to do the entire route: the eastern part of the area holds most birds.
