Portimojärvi is one of the best bird lakes and one of the most valuable wetlands in the area. The lake is actually a regulated extension of the Tengeliöjoki River. Many birds breed in the area and Portimojärvi is also a valuable as a gathering area for waterfowl during migration as in the summer closing season. Among the breeding birds are Piadeira, Mergulhão-de-pescoço-ruivo, Merganso-grande, Arrabio, Pato-trombeteiro, Andorinha-do-mar-árctica, Guincho-comum, Gaivota-pequena, Zarro-negrinha and Merganso-pequeno. Other birds you can encounter are Cisne-bravo, Mergulhão-de-pescoço-castanho, Pato-olho-d'ouro, Grou-comum, Maçarico-das-rochas and Maçarico-bastardo. But many more, see the birdlist below. Best time for a visit is from half May until the start of autumn migration.
