The Talamanca Nature Reserve is a cloud forest sanctuary near Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica’s tallest mountain. The area is known for its biodiversity, birdwatching, and hiking trails. At an elevation of around 1,500 meters, it offers cool temperatures and misty landscapes. Visitors can explore a variety of hiking trails that wind through waterfalls, old-growth trees, bromeliads, and orchids. The trails range from gentle paths to more challenging routes crossing rivers and steep terrain.
The reserve is home to over 300 bird species, including many tanagers, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, warblers, parrots, Northern Emerald-Toucanet, Red-headed Barbet, Fiery-billed Aracari, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Gartered Trogon, Collared Trogon, Lesson's Motmot, Elegant Euphonia, White-crested Coquette, Flame-colored Tanager and the elusive Resplendent Quetzal.

The Talamanca Nature Reserve is located in San Gerardo de Rivas, in the highlands of southern Costa Rica, near Chirripó National Park. From San José it takes about 3.5 to 4 hours by car. You’ll drive south on Route 2 (Interamericana Sur) toward San Isidro de El General, then follow signs to San Gerardo de Rivas. Press P on the map for directions. Best time to visit the Talamanca Nature Reserve is during the dry season from January to May.
