Open fields with bushes, ponds and forest on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands, where you can enjoy beautiful walks and the birdwatching is good.
In the Smeetshof you walk on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. The area is part of the Kempen-Broek, a more than 11,000 ha cross-border network of nature reserves. The Smeetshof, together with the adjoining Wijffelterbroek in the Netherlands, was once part of a large border marsh. The landscape was reclaimed on a large scale at the end of the last century. In 2003 work started on the restoration of the wetland and new marsh areas and pools for amphibians were created and wet and dry grasslands with scattered bushes were restored. You can walk along wet forests, marshes, meadows and streams. You can explore the wettest parts via raised wooden deck paths. Nice birds you can see in the area are Ógea, Papa-figos, Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo, Cuco-canoro, Felosa-icterina, Cotovia-pequena, Petinha-das-árvores, Dom-fafe and Escrevedeira-amarela. But many more, see the birdlist below.

Parking is available at the Smeetshoeve visitor center, Smeetshofweg I, in Bocholt. Or on the Dutch side at Nieuw Vosseven (Lochtstraat 28) in Stramproy. Click on a P on the map for directions. More than 6 different marked circular walks through the area depart from the visitor center. The route on the map that we indicate here is approximately 10 km, but can easily be shortened. Please note: wear waterproof walking shoes because some parts are very wet and muddy, boots are recommended in very wet periods.
