The Handzame Broeken area consists of a extensive agricultural area, being mainly pastures, with scattered trees, bushes and willow tree lanes. The Kreekebeek river flows through the area and is a great spot for waterfowl, like Marrequinha-comum, Piadeira and Pato-trombeteiro. The surrounding pastures are good for flocks of Abibe-comum. In winter, these pastures are part of the hunting grounds for Tartaranhão-azulado. In winter, area is also good for Cisne-bravo.
The scattered (willow) trees are great for observing Mocho-galego and Pombo-bravo. The scattered bushes and fences are a great spot for breeding species, like Cartaxo-comum and Cartaxo-nortenho.
