In 1957 "De Westhoek" was the first ever Flemish nature reserve. The reserve extends over an area of 340 to 345 hectares and is part of the largest contiguous dune area of the Flemish coast. It is sometimes called the Flemish Sahara. An impressive dune landscape, a true attraction for various birds such as Tartaranhão-azulado, Tordo-ruivo-comum, Cartaxo-comum, Felosa-comum and Papa-amoras-comum.
