The island of De Balokken is located on the border of Belgium and France. In 1990 it was created after the straightening of a river bend. A 36-hectare island in between two arms of the river Leie. The area is set up as a landscape park, with grasslands, deciduous trees, reed beds, footpaths and a boardwalk through a marsh. The lowest grounds are laid out as wet grasslands and are not accessible. In that swamp zone (4.5 hectares) there is a hide to observe (migratory) birds. The design of the bird hide was based on the nest of the rouxinol-dos-caniços. Birds that you may see in the area are Mergulhão-pequeno, Mergulhão-de-crista, Narceja-comum, rouxinol-dos-caniços, Escrevedeira-dos-caniços, Pato-branco, Garça-branca-pequena, Maçarico-das-rochas en Pássaro-bique-bique.

Nederlands: In 1990 ontstaat eiland De Balokken na de rechttrekking van een rivierbocht op de grens van België en Frankrijk. Een 36 hectare groot eiland tussen twee Leiearmen in. Het wordt ingericht als landschapspark, met graslanden, loofbomen, rietvelden, wandelpaden en een vlonderpad door een moeras. De laagst gelegen gronden zijn ingericht als natte graslanden en zijn niet toegankelijk. Daar staat een kijkhut om (trek)vogels te observeren. Het ontwerp van de vogelkijkhut werd gebaseerd op het nest van een kleine karekiet. Vogels die je in het gebied kunt zien zijn Mergulhão-pequeno, Mergulhão-de-crista, Narceja-comum, rouxinol-dos-caniços, Escrevedeira-dos-caniços, Pato-branco, Garça-branca-pequena, Maçarico-das-rochas en Pássaro-bique-bique.

Access via the Balokken bridge at the Cemetery (at the end of the Hansbekestraat). You can park here, or in the parking lot near the dog playing field and picnic area a little further (along the towpath), or at the cafeteria. Another option is the parking lot at the National Tobacco Museum, on the corner of Koestraat and Barrierestraat.

Nederlands: Toegang via de Balokkenbrug aan de Parkbegraafplaats (op het einde van de Hansbekestraat). Parkeren kan hier, of op de parking nabij de hondenspeelweide en picknickzone iets verderop (langsheen het jaagpad), of bij de cafetaria. Een andere optie is de parking bij het Nationaal Tabaksmuseum, op de hoek van de Koestraat en de Barrierestraat.
