Descrição

Gunbower Island is a 26,400 hectare flood plain and the largest inland island in Australia. About 80 percent of the area contains red gum and black box forests and is home for a large range of birds. The island consists of the Gunbower National Park and Gunbower State Forest. A large number of resident bird species all year round can be found reasonably easily in Gunbower State Forest. Including Emu, Laughing Kookaburra, Dusky Woodswallow and many smaller birds including Superb Fairywren, Western Gerygone and Buff-rumped Thornbill, to name a few.

Detalhes

Acesso

The Gunbower State Forest lies to the south of the town of Koondrook Victoria which is approximately 300 km north of Melbourne via the Calder Freeway. Gunbower State Forest is a large area with many riverside camping spots available, generally good access for all types, though seasonal closures for controlled flooding. All roads /tracks are gravel though generally well maintained. In my opinion the best time to visit is March/April and into May, however spring time is still worth the visit, though the weather is a little unpredictable.
