Parkland with jetty along southern bank of the lower Brisbane River.
The Brisbane River here is wide and slow moving as it nears its mouth with a narrow fringe of mangroves and mud flats adjoining the parks on the south bank and a small fringe of mud adjoining the golf course and rock wall on the northern bank. Downstream sit the Gateway motorway bridges and the industrial Port of Brisbane area. Just upstream on the south bank is a bulk shipping terminal and views extend up towards the CBD and ranges to the west of the city.
The primary attraction is the long jetty which gives good views across the river, and of the Gateway bridges from which a pair of Peregrine Falcon's often hunt Lorikeets crossing the river and the feral pigeons attracted to the nearby bulk grain shipping terminal. Terns (Greater Crested Tern, Australian Tern and Caspian Tern), cormorants, and pelicans are also attracted to prawn boats heading up and down the river as well as fishers on the jetty, especially in the cooler months. The mangroves often hold Mangrove Gerygone, Striated Heron and Sacred Kingfisher. Whimbrel are sometimes present on the mud flats. There is also a small wetland at the western end where Lewin's Rail have been seen in the past.
Captain Doug Hislop and Queensport Rocks parks are located at the end of Metroplex Ave off the Lytton Rd / Creek Rd intersection in Murarrie. There is street parking along Metroplex Ave. Press P on the map for directions. Public buses run to the top of Metroplex Ave, as does a shuttle bus service from Cannon Hill train station. The parks are on the bikeway that crosses the Gateway bridges to the northern suburbs. The jetty also provides mooring for private watercraft. It is a small site and easily covered in 30 minutes birding.
There is a public BBQ and shelter in Captain Doug Hislop park and public toilets nearby next to the Metro Bistro Cafe cnr Metroplex & Borthwick Ave. Brewdog brewery sits in the middle of the site and also has toilets and ample parking as well as serving food and has outdoor seating overlooking the jetty area.
