From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Trzmielojad are possible. With a bit of luck, bocian czarny will also pass by. Other regular species are: myszołów, krogulec, jastrząb, pustułka (zwyczajna), kobuz, kania ruda, kania czarna, rybołów, błotniak łąkowy, błotniak stawowy and bocian biały. In later autumn large flocks of grzywacz pass by. From time to time jerzyk alpejski can be observed on food flights.

The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
