Opis
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like mewa romańska, mewa żółtonoga and śmieszka. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like kulik mniejszy, kamusznik, piaskowiec and brodziec piskliwy.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly rybitwa rzeczna and rybitwa różowa, but sometimes also rybitwa czubata.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of burzyk żółtodzioby can be observed. Small numbers of tajfunnik cienkodzioby can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like burzyk pólnocny and burzyk malutki.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like mewa delawarska, mewa polarna and, in 2011, a slepowron zóltoczelny.
