Opis
If you want a chance to add a few more native birds to your list, the Totara Walk in Pureora Forest is not to be missed. Aside from New Zealand Kaka both Shining Bronze Cuckoo and Long-tailed Koel may be seen and heard over summer and Red-crowned Parakeet and North Island Robin are both resident year round. Bats are not birds (but they did win Bird of the Year for NZ in 2021) and these can be seen at dusk out along the road edge.

Puerora Forest was where the conservation movement in NZ really took hold in the 1970s, with protestors taking to the trees to prevent them being felled. The whole park has lots of access points but this is one of the best. There are a couple of unpaved roads adjacent to the track where you can follow signs to other access points, including a viewing tower.
