The Friese Veen is a small area rich in birds. The bushes and trees surrounding the lake are good for woodpecker species and various types of finches such as grubodziób and gil. The open water is good for rybitwa rzeczna and rybitwa czarna in the spring. In the winter months you will see various geese and ducks such as nurogęś. Around the water you have a good chance of seeing zimorodek. The area has a bird hide. In the southwest of the area there are many ditches with reeds. Good for rokitniczka and trzcinniczek (zwyczajny).

Nederlands: Het Friese Veen is een klein vogelrijk gebiedje onder de rook van Groningen met open water, moerasbos en rietkragen. De bomen en struiken om de plas heen zijn goed voor spechtensoorten en verschillende soorten vinken. O.m. grubodziób en gil. Het open water is in het voorjaar goed voor rybitwa rzeczna en rybitwa czarna. In de wintermaanden zie je er verschillende ganzen en eenden zoals nurogęś. Rondom het water heb je een goede kans op zimorodek. Er is in het gebied een vogelkijkhut aanwezig. In het zuidwesten van het Friese Veen zijn veel slootjes met riet. Goed voor rokitniczka en trzcinniczek (zwyczajny).

The Friese Veen is located south of the city of Groningen near the lake of Paterwoldsemeer. There is a parking lot north of the Friese Veen from where you can explore the area on foot. Click on the P in the map for directions. The circular walk indicated on the map is approximately 4 km.

Nederlands: Het Friese Veen ligt ten zuiden van de stad Groningen bij het Paterwoldsemeer. Ten noorden van het Friese Veen is een parkeerplaats aanwezig van waaruit de wandeling kan worden gestart. Parkeren kan ook langs de Hoofdweg ter hoogte van nummer 266, in Paterswolde. Kom je met de bus, stap dan uit bij de halte Noordwijk of Vennerstraat in Paterswolde. Klik op een P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. De op de kaart aangegeven rondwandeling is ongeveer 4 km.
